Horse hair pottery was originally created by Native Americans who use the natural world around them to decorate their art. Each piece is completely unique, from hand throwing the pottery to the application of the horse hair. Horse hair pottery has no glaze on it. Terra sigillata is an ultrarefined clay slip that can give a soft sheen when applied to bone-dry wares and, if polished or burnished while still damp, may give a high gloss. The ancient Greeks and Romans used this technique in lieu of glaze. Your custom piece can be decorated in any of 3 colors of terra sigillata Kelvin uses. These are fired in Raku and then taken out of the kiln hot. Bringing the coarse hair of a horse’s tail in contact with a glowing hot pot creates the unique and intricate one of a kind design. A handful of the horse’s tail hair is all that is needed to make the piece of pottery but the longer the better.
The Painted Pony's very own Kelvin Davis helps horse lovers honor and remember their cherished friends with his custom pieces. To show the true color of your horses hair, a braid will placed around the neck of the pottery. If there is not enough hair for a braid, a tassel will be made in place of braid.

As always, there are workshops and lectures led by top clay art artists and educators and there will be plenty "clay play" for the kids, too. The headlining artist this year is Julia Galloway, a professor at the University of Montana, whose work has been shown all of the US, Canada and Asia.
